Possum Control

Possum Control in Edisto Island

Possum Control Guided by Inspection & Exclusion

Effective possum control starts by finding where the animal shelters, how it enters, and what keeps drawing it back. Apex of Edisto Pest Management provides wildlife control for Edisto Island homes and businesses, using inspection findings to guide trapping or exclusion and the sealing of access points after removal.

We’ve served Edisto Island since 1995 as a locally owned and family-operated pest management company. We’re licensed and insured, and our process addresses the immediate animal concern as well as accessible openings around the property.

Our Possum Removal Process

We begin with a thorough wildlife inspection to identify the animal and locate its access routes. This step helps distinguish possum activity from signs left by other wildlife and provides the information we need to select a removal method.

Trapping or Exclusion
After the inspection, we use trapping or exclusion based on the conditions we find. Exclusion prevents an animal from using an identified opening to enter or remain within a structure. The method depends on the animal’s location, access route, and the property itself.

Entry-Point Sealing
Once removal is complete, we seal wildlife access points within our service scope. This work addresses openings that could remain available to animals seeking shelter beneath or inside a structure.

Referrals for Structural Repairs
Some wildlife activity exposes damage that requires carpentry work beyond our scope. When repairs are needed, we refer customers to a local carpentry business.

Why Opossums Visit Edisto Island Properties

Opossums are opportunistic feeders that eat insects, carrion, fruits, grains, and garbage. Food, water, and nearby shelter can encourage them to remain around a property.

These animals commonly use existing shelter rather than creating elaborate new dens. They may occupy burrows previously used by other animals, tree cavities, brush piles, or spaces beneath decks, sheds, and buildings. Opossums can also occasionally enter attics and garages.

During an inspection, we examine the reported activity and the conditions that may be supporting it, including overgrown foliage, accessible crawl spaces, and potential burrow sites.

Common conditions associated with opossum activity include:

  • Uncovered or overflowing garbage containers
  • Fallen fruit, nuts, or food left outdoors
  • Standing water around the property
  • Overgrown foliage near structures
  • Accessible crawl spaces, burrows, and openings beneath buildings

South Carolina Rules for Opossum Control

South Carolina classifies opossums as furbearers. The licensed trapping season for opossums runs from December 1 through March 1, but nuisance-animal rules differ from ordinary seasonal trapping rules.

A nuisance opossum may be taken year-round under a Depredation Permit, which authorizes control of wildlife causing property damage. No permit is required to control a nuisance opossum within 100 yards of the property owner’s residence. The rules that apply can depend on where the animal is located and who performs the work.

State law prohibits relocating opossums. In addition, anyone who charges a fee to remove or control wildlife should be registered as a Wildlife Control Operator with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Property owners considering paid wildlife control should verify the provider’s applicable credentials.

No repellents or toxicants are registered for use against opossums in the state. These restrictions are important reasons not to improvise with chemicals or move a trapped animal elsewhere.

Reduce Recurring Possum Activity

Prevention focuses on reducing food, water, cover, and access around the property. These measures can make the area less attractive to opossums, although changing outdoor conditions can’t prevent every future wildlife visit.

Practical property measures include:

  • Secure trash containers: Keep lids closed and address overflowing garbage that provides an accessible food source.
  • Remove outdoor food: Pick up fallen fruit and nuts, and bring pet food indoors when it isn’t being used.
  • Reduce nearby cover: Cut back overgrown foliage and remove unnecessary brush piles close to structures.
  • Address denning access: Close accessible openings beneath decks, sheds, and buildings after confirming that animals aren’t trapped inside.
  • Check crawl spaces: Identify damaged or open access areas that wildlife may use for shelter.

Our possum control company serving Edisto Island considers potential burrow sites, structural openings, and other shelter conditions when planning preventive work.
